Flake ice is used in direct contact, or more frequently, mixed with cold water to pre-chill fruits or vegetables. This pre-chilling consists in removing the heat contained in the vegetable products during the harvest. It reduces metabolic processes and bacterial action thereby prolonging conservation in the warehouse as well as product freshness. The blend of water and flake ice washes residues, dust from the fields and impurities from pre-chilled products that look cleaner, fresher and more appealing.
Our ice is used in a number of ways to cool produce. During harvest, ice is used to remove field heat from certain vegetables. To maintain product temperature and quality, ice is also used to ice cases prior to shipping, and to top ice shipping containers after being loaded into trucks or rail cars. Our flake ice machine have also been used to freeze orange juice at the peak of the season. The juice is applied directly to the ice maker evaporator to create frozen flakes that are then stored and processed throughout the year.
